Hip-hip icon and entrepreneur Russell Simmons will discuss his experience as one of the industry’s pioneers at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Nigh University Center.
The presentation, hosted by the UCO College of Business, is open to the public.
“We are more than excited to have such a distinguished icon on campus to share his story with our students, faculty, staff and community members,” said Mickey Hepner, Ph.D., dean of the College of Business.
“As one of the most respected names in not just hip-hop, but the business community, as well, Simmons will emphasize the steps needed to be a successful business owner,” he added.
Author of the nonfiction book “Super Rich: A Guide to Having it All,” Simmons will focus on entrepreneurship during his interview-style presentation. Simmons is best known for founding hip-hop record label Def Jam Recordings in 1984. He is currently the CEO of Rush Communications and has been named by USA Today as one of the 25 most influential people of the last 25 years.
As a part of Simmons’ visit, the UCO College of Business has also partnered with John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City to bring Simmons to the school to speak with students.
“Mr. Simmons’ visit to John Marshall is an opportunity for our students to hear from one of the most successful businessmen in the country”, said Aspasia Carlson, Principal at John Marshall High School.
“ He is a perfect example of the characteristics we want to instill in our students: dream big, work hard, stay focused, and all your efforts will pay off.”
Tickets to the event at UCO are available to the public at $10 each, and can be purchased at the door, which opens at 1 p.m. No reservations will be accepted, and seating will be on a first come first served basis. There will be a book signing immediately following the lecture. The John Marshall High School presentation is not open to the public.
